When danish women under the age of twenty choose to have a child, society often sees it as an irresponsible choice. However, for some young women it can be a way of creating a future.
Often young mothers are met by prejudices and are facing incomprehension towards their choice of being a mom. But having a baby should be an independent choice. Motherhood should be about love.
"The best thing about being a mom is the love you get from your children. Even though you're sometimes the angry or evil mom, you're still the best mom in the world. The toughest thing about being a mom is when you're not always being nice to your kids, so conflicts arise. And the time that you don't always have with your children, but you really wish you had.”
- Rikke Vestergaard Lauritsen, 24 years old and mother to Emilie 8 years old and Silas 2 years old
"The best thing about being a mom is the unconditional love i give and receive every single day. To know that he is my little human and to know, that he needs me. A mother can never be replaced and therefore it’s the best title i will ever get. The hardest thing about being a mom is the constant worrying i have, and to know that one day he will not be my little baby anymore, and then my worries won't matter that much."
- Julie Berthel Karlsen, 19 years old and mother to Elliott 5 months old
"To be a mother is the opportunity to love forever and the privilege of always being loved. It is the reason to accept yourself as a person with all the flaws you might have, and mistakes you might make. It is a fantastic journey that you get to experience together with this little human being, who’s life you are now a part of. Sometimes I look at my son and think: I wish my energy was better. Other times I see the thankfulness in his eyes, and thats when I know I'm doing good."
- Anna Elisabeth Hald, 18 years old and mother to Loui 2 years old
"There are two sides of being a mom. The hard part with all the challenges and your abilities getting tested to the limit. And the fact, that you have to accept this new form of life. It’s damn hard and often it takes some tears and I feel like giving up. But then I look at my boy and I know how much I love to be a mom. It’s worth everything!”
- Mette Holm Olsen, 20 years old and mother to Elias 9 months old
